Smitten Polish Bluebird II

Blue and brown is one of my favourite colour combinations - they're complementary colours (direct opposites on the colour wheel) which is why they look so good together! Smitten Bluebird II (a reformulation of *Bluebird* I believe) is a lovely creamy taupe base with various teal glitters, including some holo teal glitters. Noelie has done my colour geek thinking for me with this one!

The base is quite sheer, but it's not a jelly. I used three coats to get full coverage, and where the glitters are deeper in the polish, they turn more greenish, adding to the overall effect. In direct light the polish is quite caramel coloured, but in more subdued lighting it's deeper and pinker-toned. You can see the difference in the two macro shots:

Bluebird II is packed with glitter! I used three coats here to get the base opaque and even, and really I had too much glitter. I used two coats of Gelous and a thick coat of Seche Vite to smooth it out, but it's still a little bumpy :(  Next time I wear this one I'll layer one or two coats over a taupe base. After I'd looked at  the macro shots I added more topcoat, and this did make the mani a lot smoother and I was much happier with it.

The colours in the teal holo glitters are so pretty when they catch the light!

I purchased Smitten Bluebird II direct from Noelie at her Etsy shop; she ships internationally. Llarowe also stocks Smitten polishes and ships worldwide.

  2. I wasn't expecting to love this combination, but it looks great! But, blue and brown aren't complementary, blue and orange are! If you combine any of the complementary colors they result in brown!

    1. Thanks - I love it when something that sounds unlikely turns out nice!

I'm sorry, I should have been a bit clearer in my explanation of why blue and brown are complementary colours - brown is a 'tone' of orange (what you get when you add black to a colour) so they are still opposite on the colour wheel - and therefore look good together.

If you get the mix of two complementary colours JUST right you can make black, but with paint it's really hard to find exact complentaries so the combination usually comes out brown as you say. Sometimes I paint with a limited palette in watercolour (just two reds, two blues and two yellows) and it's really challenging to get a good black when I need it!
