Scofflaw Letter to Kurt Vonnegut with gradient and dots

This started out just as a straightforward blue mani with Scofflaw Letter to Kurt Vonnegut, so let's have a look at that polish first! Letter to Kurt Vonnegut is a light periwinkle blue with an interesting shimmer, lots of tiny glitters in various shades of blue and the occasional shard of gunmetal. It was a limited edition Finch made a few months ago, and if I remember correctly it sold out fairly quickly.

The application on this was smooth and easy - this is two coats with Gelous and Seche Vite and it dried to a super glassy finish.

Much as I loved the colour, I had a problem with my nails......... as you can see in the picture below, they're not properly square! When I cut them the other day, I didn't go far enough into what I'd let grow out straight, and the more I looked at them, the more this was starting bug me. So out with my file and square them off properly - but then of course I've filed off some of the polish on the tips so the mani is pretty much ruined!

I didn't want to take Letter to Kurt Vonnegut off straight away, so the ideal solution was a gradient to cover the tips! I used Bourjois 10 day polish in this nice dusky airforce blue - it doesn't seem to have a name, just no. 18. It has a bit of a subtle shimmer and tones well with Letter to Kurt Vonnegut. Actually, Letter to Kurt Vonnegut is a great base for a gradient with a darker shade as the glitters seem to pick up and extend the gradient further down the nail. And then I couldn't resist adding big dots - I'm on a bit of a roll with dots at the moment. I used Barry M Gelly Nail Paint in Lychee for these dots - it's a perfect polish this, being very opaque but quite fluid. I think these dots turned out a lot better than the ones I did with OPI My Vampire is Buff (the dots are near the bottom of that post) - although MViB and Lychee are similar in colour, the Lychee dots are both denser and rounder. And I think dots look better on square nails than pointy ones :D

Scofflaw Prototypes

I had an incredible stroke of luck a few weeks ago and I WON a draw for three prototype polishes from the wonderful Finch, creator of Scofflaw!

I believe these are early versions of three of Finch's latest collection. Each one is amazing, they don't have names, so I'll just call them blue, grey and pink!

*Blue* is a sheer blue jelly with black, bright red (!!), aubergine, gunmetal and tiny neon yellow glitter. I layered two coats over Bourjois 1 Seconde polish in Bleu Water, which is almost exactly the same shade as the base. 

This looks like what eventually became Paranoid Android, I believe. 

Next is *pink* - if you want to buy something similar Wyld Stallyns would be the nearest, although the glitters in my version seem a warmer set of colours than the final one. I especially love the aubergine matte glitters in this! Again the polish is quite jellyish, and I have an old Dior polish almost the exact same shade as the base, so I used that as undies for this mani:

And last but not least, *grey*. Pale grey with matt neon blue and all sorts of mossy green glitter. This is stunning! I wore it for days, I liked it so much. I used a base of OPI Skull and Glossbones for this mani. 

And I'd guess this one became Electric Salamander in it's final version.

Scofflaw Whiskey Tango Foxtrot is one of those irresistable colour combinations! Teal is one of my favourite colours, and its complementary is orange-red, so this works a treat!

Scofflaw Whiskey Tango Foxtrot is a teal jelly with red and white glitters of various shapes and sizes, and gold microglitter too. I didn't want a translucent effect on my nails though, and I wanted to make the overall effect quite bold too, so I used a base of Illamasqua Venous.

Illamasqua Venous is a fantastic blue-green cream. Apart from being a great colour, the application is just perfect - this is one coat plus Seche Vite quick drying topcoat. ONE COAT!

After a day or so I added Scofflaw Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. I used two coats, plus a thick coat of Seche Vite quick drying topcoat to smooth the glitter out. WTF pulled Venous a tiny bit more bluish, but not much. I love the finished effect - I wore this for several days until I had a little accident running - I slipped, grasped at a boulder to steady myself and snapped off the tip of my right thumbnail. WTF indeed! I had to remove the mani to check the damage; fortunately it was only a millimetre or so, so I was able to reshape the nail to match the rest without needing to shorten them all :)

Scofflaw is one of the newer indie brands; I think Finch, the creator, just set up shop at the beginning of this year. I was completely blown away when I first saw pictures of Scofflaw polishes, especially this one. I just had to have it! Flotsam & Jetsam is a sheer, pale mint green with purple and turquoise shard glitter and microglitter. There is also a very pretty green shimmer in there too.

I have to say I don't think I've done this polish justice with my photos. I loved it so much I ended up wearing this mani for four days (and it looked as good on the last day as the first) but it's a very difficult colour to photograph! My fingers are not as red as they look! The picture above is with light from above (taken on the table where I usually do my macro shots). The next few pictures are near the window, and you can see that with light behind, the overall effect is much more delicate.

Scofflaw Flotsam & Jetsam

Flotsam is floating wreckage of a ship, and jetsam is ship's cargo or equipment that is cast ashore to lighten the load and ultimately washes up on shore. The colours in the polish remind me of bits of smashed up coloured glass floating around in the froth on the sea - I think the polish is very aptly named!

Flotsam & Jetsam was a nice consistency and easy to apply; I used three coats, plus a thick coat of Sinful Colors Gel Tech topcoat - which seems to smooth out glitters a treat and dries quite quickly.
