Smitten Polish Polka Derp

This is such a fun polish! It's a light teal-blue base somewhere between a cream and a jelly (does that make it a 'crelly'? ) with circular glitters of various sizes and colours. I wanted to create an effect of sparse glitters over a densely coloured background, so I used one coat of Boots No7 Stand Back, which is a blue cream almost identical in colour to Polka Derp, as the base for this mani. I used two thin coats of Polka Derp, just letting the glitters lie on my nails at random without any attempt to place them in order. Polka Derp is quite a smooth polish; I just used a single coat of Seche Vite to finish this off.

On some of my nails the glitters piled up on top of each other; I really like this effect! The macro shots also show the abundant smaller round glitters, similar to the colour of the base, in the polish, which catch the light and add extra texture and interest to the polish.

Polka Derp was a small batch limited edition polish. I understand it was named because it resulted from a slight of hand with the blue pigment - this batch turned out to a lot darker than intended! A happy accident, in my opinion; I love the colour and the name just adds to the fun!

Blue and brown is one of my favourite colour combinations - they're complementary colours (direct opposites on the colour wheel) which is why they look so good together! Smitten Bluebird II (a reformulation of *Bluebird* I believe) is a lovely creamy taupe base with various teal glitters, including some holo teal glitters. Noelie has done my colour geek thinking for me with this one!

The base is quite sheer, but it's not a jelly. I used three coats to get full coverage, and where the glitters are deeper in the polish, they turn more greenish, adding to the overall effect. In direct light the polish is quite caramel coloured, but in more subdued lighting it's deeper and pinker-toned. You can see the difference in the two macro shots:

Bluebird II is packed with glitter! I used three coats here to get the base opaque and even, and really I had too much glitter. I used two coats of Gelous and a thick coat of Seche Vite to smooth it out, but it's still a little bumpy :(  Next time I wear this one I'll layer one or two coats over a taupe base. After I'd looked at  the macro shots I added more topcoat, and this did make the mani a lot smoother and I was much happier with it.
