Jelly Sandwich with Quirk Peace Is Free

A sort of jelly sandwich today. The base is American Apparel Manilla, with a generous coat of Quirk Peace Is Free (lots of lovely glitters in this one). Then I decided I wanted to make the glitter a bit more 'matte' looking so I added a thin coat of Sally Hansen Complete Manicure in Polar Bare. Polar Bare is a sheer, jellyish white.

Polar Bare turned the mustardy yellow of Manilla into a more orange toned peach sort of a shade - not at all what I was expecting but I do like it! Finished with Seche Vite Quick Drying Topcoat.

I purchased Quirk Peace is Free from the Quirk website; the Sally Hansen and American Apparel polishes were a gift from a polish friend in the USA.

Rescue Beauty Lounge Opaque Nude (with stamping)

I have a bit of a weakness for 'nude' colours, but they have to be rich and creamy, I don't like sheer nudes at all. This is one of my favourites - Rescue Beauty Lounge Opaque Nude.

Rescue Beauty Lounge Opaque Nude is a dense, pale, slightly pinkish nude polish. It doesn't match my skintone; it's quite a bit lighter, but I'm not sure I like the idea of real mannequin hands anyway. The application is impeccable; this mani is two coats plus Seche Vite but a single coat would probably have done.

I wanted to use this colour as the base for a stamped mani I've had in mind for ages. The stamping is not an original idea, it's a combination I've seen a few times, and every time I see it, I think 'that's so pretty, I must do my nails like that'. And finally I've got around to doing it!

One of the nicest examples of this mani that I've seen is Jenny's at Lavish Layerings - she used a slightly darker base than mine (OPI My Very First Knockwurst, which is another super nude shade). The design is a whole nail pattern stamped in white, and the overall effect reminds me of a William Morris wallpaper.

The stamping plate is Bundle Monster BM221 and I used Sally Hansen Insta-Dri in Whirlwind White to do the stamping. I love the frothy girliness of these colours together, but I'm really tempted to try this plate again soon in some darker colours, to get more of a William Morris feel...........maybe a slatey-blue with yellow.

I got both of these polishes in swaps, but Rescue Beauty Lounge Opaque Nude can be purchased at their website; the description refers to wildly sophisticated girls with perfectly oval buff-colored nails who never have a bad hair day  so I guess I have to take this off before I go out for a fifteen mile run across a windswept moor in the morning!

The bundle monster stamping plates come in a set of 25; I got mine from Amazon.co.uk but Bundle Monster do have their own website where you can buy them direct.

Splatter pattern stamping - Barry M Bright Purple with Konad plate m21

I haven't done any stamping for ages, but I was inspired to buy a new plate (Konad m21) by this lovely splotch stamped manicure by The Bookish Manicurist. The plate arrived today and I couldn't wait to try it out!

My base is Barry M Bright Purple - which is a super plummy magenta sort of colour. I used three coats here, plus Seche Vite. I always prefer to seal my nails with topcoat before I start stamping - when I've forgotten to do this on occasion in the past my stamping has streaked and blurred when I applied topcoat. I stamped on random splats using Konad Special Polish in Black, then applied basecoat over these before stamping on the white splats with Sally Hansen Insta-Dri in Whirlwind White. Another layer of basecoat over this and a final coat of Seche Vite. I prefer to use a runny clear coat over my stamping before applying SV - again I've had things go wrong in the past and I've found this always works well for me. There's nothing worse that seeing a perfectly stamped nail go all melty and streaky as you drag a thick topcoat like SV through it!

These pictures are taken near a lamp and (on my screen at least) the colour of Barry M Bright Purple looks a bit pinker and lighter than in real life. I'm blaming my dog for the lack of colour accuracy - today has been cold but quite bright; we set off for what I'd intended as a short walk but she had other ideas and was so enthusiastic I just went along with it........... two miles became five and when I got home to start photographing my nails the light had gone and I had to use a lamp. pfft! This last picture is in natural light, right up against the window.

I purchased Barry M Bright Purple from Boots recently - it was one of those colours that jumped around on the shelf shouting 'buy me' as I walked past! The Konad Black and Sally Hansen Whirlwind White are my stamping staples and I've had them forever. I've tried stamping with other black polishes but nothing works as well for me as the Konad polish, so that's what I use!

Nails Inc Feathers - swatch and review

Nails Inc 'Feathers' range is a rather strange and intriguing little collection of polishes. They are a densely packed mix of tiny bar glitter, and I suppose the finished effect on the nail is intended to look like a bird's plumage....

There are four colours in the collection, my pick was Chester, a nice mix of aqua, peach and lemon - the other options in the range were Cornwall (blue and white, which I've reviewed here), Edinburgh (blue and peach) and York (peach and white). I preferred the complexity of the three colour mix.

Here's my finished mani

Overall, I like the effect a lot more than I was expecting. I was aiming for dense coverage, rather than a light sprinkling of glitter (as I'm not terribly fond of bar glitter in principle) so I used three coats over a neutral base (Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure in Crinoline). I think the colours in Chester work well together, and the finished mani is quite smooth......... but that did take a bit of work! Here's a closer picture:

Now let's talk about the application! I started with an existing neutral mani I'd been wearing for a day or so, and applied one coat of Feathers. As you can see in the pictures below, this stuff is very roughly textured! Another thing is that if you apply with normal brush strokes (from cuticle to nail tip), all the glitters end up pointing in the same direction, and, in my opinion anyway, that looks a bit odd. Easily fixed by varying the direction of the brushstrokes and a bit of dabbing to get a more random application.

I think it looks quite cute at this stage (it reminds me of multi-coloured sugar strands on an iced bun), and I don't think it would be a problem to smooth it out with a few layers of topcoat. Another possibility would be a jelly sandwich......... Today, though, I was interested in getting a dense effect with Feathers on its own. I was concerned that with this level of roughness, when I put on the next coat, all the glitters would pile up and I'd end up with a horrible clumpy mess. So I put another layer of basecoat over the first coat of Feathers and let it dry before adding the next coat. I used basecoat because the one I have to hand dries quite quickly, and I was a bit wary of shrinkage from Seche Vite at this stage. I did the same thing between the second and third coat of Feathers, then applied two coats of Gelous and a very thick coat of Seche Vite. If you look carefully at the close up picture you can see how the bar glitter has sort of  'suspended' in all the base and top coats - I think this effect is quite cool. Clean up consisted of removing a few 'tufts' around the edges of my nails and cuticles with a pair of tweezers after drying, and knocking back a couple of stray strands of glitter on the tips of my nails with a glass file. I'm not sure I'd wear this type of polish without a base - I'm far to fond of a precise edge around the cuticles so I always use a base and layer glitter over it.

So quite a bit of effort to apply, but an interesting and unusual effect. Including the base of Crinoline, the mani is about 14 coats, so my nails are really thick! They look almost like stick-on acrylics! I use a modified version of the foil method for removing a thick, glittery mani like this - maybe I'll do a short post about removal soon :)

Just for completeness, here is the base I started with - Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure in Crinoline. This is a super slighty cool-toned porcelain pink, all the better for the fact I picked it up by chance in Poundland! Three coats plus Seche Vite. It reminds me of a delicate, shiny, birds egg!

What do you think of the Feathers? Is it worth the effort?

I purchased my bottle of Nails Inc Feathers from the Nails Inc counter at a regional department store; it's available directly from Nails Inc at their website here Nails Inc Shop Feathers
